So work on my Third year project has begun. Basically, my university has a pretty nifty driving simulator set up which allows research to be conducted on how users interact with the car. In order for the results of this research to be valid, subjects must act as they would inside a real car which means the sim must feel as real as possible. Unfortunately, the current brake pedal is a bit lackluster and one of the main comments from subjects is that it doesn't give enough braking feel. My project is to design a brake pedal which can be incorporated into the simulator that should be able to provide the necessary feel, but this feel should be customisable, preferably through software. It must also be able to emulate specific braking events such as ABS activation or brake failure. Hopefully I'll be able to document some of my progress here.
